Ive always loved reading and learning. I cant remember a time when I havent gone to bed without dozing off with a book in my hands or having someone read to me. So, it came as no surprise to anyone when I grew up and decided to become a teacher, and later a writer.
As a child I was fascinated of scenes of Jesus surrounded by children mesmerized by His voice, enveloped in crowds of people listening to His words and encircled by His disciples waiting His next direction. Jesus taught about Gods love. Many of His lessons were told in story form.
Over the years Ive been in education, Ive worked with all ages, in paid and volunteer position, and taught a variety of subjects. Through these experiences Ive gathered many stories, but one of my favorites is about a woman I worked with when my younger son was in middle school.
Andrew was in seventh grade, and I was the Chairman of the Hospitality Committee, a fancy title that simply meant I was in charge of refreshments and food setup for all PTA events. I was fortunate to have Linda (not her real name), the Head Custodian, to assist me with this job. She was around my age, a hard worker with a joyful outlook on life, and she always went the extra mile when I asked for her help.
I was talking to one of the teachers one day and she told me how much all the teachers loved Linda. She said that Linda wanted a promotion to a higher position in the system. Linda was certainly capable enough; however, because she didnt have a high school degree, Linda was in the highest position for her education level.
Id volunteered in several adult literacy programs and knew how sensitive the issue of education could be for an individual, especially a high school dropout. Rather than approach Linda myself, I went to the principal and said if shed like to approach Linda about the subject, Id be happy to work with her to get her GED (High School Equivalency Diploma).
Linda and I met a couple of times a week for several months. She was a quick learner and a dedicated student, as I knew she would be. We also talked about our personal lives and goals. Linda told me that as soon as she received her GED, she was going to post for a higher paying job, and that would mean shed be transferred to another school in the county.
Linda passed the test and received her degree. The principal, teachers and staff held a party in her honor, complete with balloons and a graduation cake to celebrate her hard work and success. Lindas face was a glowing combination of joy and pride.
About a week later while we were setting up for the end-of-the-year Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, I kiddingly told her that she couldnt post for that new job for at least another year.
My son still has one more year at this school, Linda, I said. And everybody here loves and depends on you so much. My name will be mud if you leave!
Lindas cheeks flushed and her eyes brimmed. All Ive been able to think about for years is that Ive been held back by a lack of education . . . but Im not going anywhere. Then she smiled. I couldnt be happier than I am today. This school is home and these people are like family, so Ive decided to stay.
But I thought you wanted to move to a higher paying job, I said.
She shook her head no. Im staying here, but its my choice . . . Im not being forced to stay. Her face softened. And that makes all the difference in the world.
Its my choice and that makes all the difference in the world. How true these words are. God sent His Son, His most precious gift to us. He doesnt demand that we choose Jesus. But when we make Him our choice, it makes all the difference in the world.
